I wanted to give an update on somethings in my Trich life going on because I have so much going on at once.
I’m on the Keto diet.
I just bought a supplement this morning called Ashwagandha that is supposed to be really great for stress and anxiety.
A friend of mine on Facebook messaged me about it this morning and the things she said really resonated with me so I purchased some.
Reading the reviews convinced me to give it a try.
Another thing she mentioned was Apple Cider Vinegar?
I was really dealing with a lot of stress, anxiety and worry last week and I’ve still managed to stay pull-free through it.
Ketogenic Diet for Trichotillomania
Sugar was especially causing me to want to pull more, and almost immediately.
I’m no Keto and trichotillomania expert here, I just know what works for me.
Every single person with trich is different, our bodies are different, our food interests are different.
I like fat, meat, cheese and all those goodies, I still get a lot of veggies to be creative with.
It hasn’t been complete torture.
Yes, I miss donuts 🍩 and cake 🍰 and ice cream 🍦and nothing is as good as the real thing.
Here’s the major dilemma though, those foods make me feel good at first and really bad later.
While the keto foods don’t really do either.
I do cheat sometimes but I don’t overdo it because I don’t want to face severe consequences later.
The Keto Diet Improved My Sleep Anxiety
The Keto diet definitely helps me get more sleep and lack of sleep was a real trigger for me.
I had one cheat day where I had to go to a Christmas pot luck kind of thing and that was the only night where my sleep wasn’t that great.
I have another cheat day coming up too, Christmas party on Sunday after church.
I think I’m going to fast until then too, just so I’m extra hungry.
Ever since I started Keto, I’ve come to like the fasting part.
I pretty much only eat in an 8 hour window, then don’t eat the other 16 (usually from like 7pm-11am the next day)
Fasting on the Keto Diet Helps My Focus
I gain mental clarity when I fast and I always used to force myself to eat because of that “breakfast is the most important meal” stuff they told me when I was a kid. (well that wasn’t true!)
I’m finding that I work way better without eating in the morning, I just have some coffee and coconut oil and I’m good to go til noon.
With Keto, you can not eat til noon, and it’s perfectly cool beans. I love that.
I have a hard time with the diet because it’s very limiting, especially when there are so many good treats around the holidays.
My diet pretty much consists of fats, proteins and a lot of above-ground vegetables.
Fruits are pretty much off-limits although I do throw a few in my vegetable smoothie in the mornings to help kill the bite of the kale.
You can have as much kale as you like – I know, joy right?
I’m not all super strict on myself, I stay under 30 carbs a day and make sure I’m consuming good fats like coconut oil.
I read that coconut oil was great for the brain and since Keto is a high fat diet, I just eat by the spoonfuls most days.
Yes, I do that.
Coconut oil is like good for everything right? Eating coconut oil is good for hair, your brain, weight loss, you name it….
I go through a pint a week now.
I’m really eager to grow my hair out in some areas.
It’s really thin this year. I used to have really thick hair.
It’s all weird right now and I feel funny but I keep telling myself, it’s okay Lesley, it’s gonna be beautiful soon.
It’s so many crazy lengths all over my head right now but it’s okay, I just put my hands on my head every day and I thank the Lord that my hair is growing back and it’s going to be even more beautiful than it ever was!
As far as my mental health, I feel like I am doing better but I feel like it’s a combo of taking in the truths in that new JP book I’m reading and also eating better with this Keto diet.
